WhatsApp Unique Username Feature coming Soon: What to Expect
WhatsApp is currently working on a new feature that will allow users to set up a username for their profile in which non-contacts can reach out to them without their phone number. This feature is currently under development, but details on how this works have surfaced, so here are what you should be expecting.
WhatsApp for Android beta 2.23.11.15 contains the code for the feature that will let users choose a username for their profile as confirmed by WABetaInfo, the WhatsApp feature tracker website. They have also shared a preview of how this upcoming WhatsApp feature will appear.
Based on the preview image they shared, the social media messaging service shows the message 'This is your unique username' under the username picker. With this, it is safe to conclude that two users cannot share the same username, so it will be unique just as it is on other social media platforms like Telegram, and Twitter.
To access the feature, the user has to tap on the three-dot menu > head to Settings, > and then Profile. Under the profile Name section, they will see the pencil icon beside the WhatsApp username which allows users to change the username to any they want. This means that once selected, you can still edit it, though it must be unique.
So the WhatsApp username preview shown by WABetaInfo gives us an idea of how this feature should look like. However, it is important to note that the feature could totally change on the final release such as the username not having to be unique, or the username not changeable until after some certain months e.t.c So until there is an official announcement from Meta, let's have these in mind.
